so you have the standard 5 ships and a time frame to place them on your half of the map wich is somehow gridded... use hit counters for them to create hypothetical hits... and when it reaches max.. it dies and sinks..

new idea, why don't you replace hit counters with beacons...each person places 1 beacon at a time on the grid....
